Abstract

478,109. Surface hardening metal articles. DENNEEN, F. S., and DUNN, W. C. Oct. 29, 1936, No. 15290/37. Divided application. [A Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, June 15, 1937.] [Class 72] [Also in Group XI] In surface hardening by inductive heating followed by quenching an article having an enlarged part is progressively moved through two inductors 13, 14 of different diameter connected to secondaries 16, 17 co-operating with a movable primary 15. The primary 15 is inductively coupled with the secondary 16 while the shaft 10 is moved through the inductor 13 and quenching ring 24, but when the enlarged splined part 29 moves into inductor 14 the end of the shaft engages support 12 to operate lever 12a to raise the primary 15 into operating relationship with the secondary 17. The shaft has an intermediate enlarged portion 28 and when this portion is within the inductor 13 the switch 22 in the primary circuit is opened and is not closed until the primary is lifted away from the secondary 16. Both inductors are perforated and provided with quenching chambers and connections. A flexible shield ring 23 is arranged between the inductor 13 and the quenching ring 24.
