477,861. Coating metals; annealing. ARMSTRONG, J. J. V. Nov. 13, 1936, No. 30983. Convention date, Nov. 16, 1935. [Classes 72 and 82 (ii)] [Also in Groups XXII and XII In an apparatus and method for the heat-treatment of long lengths of metal, successive portions are heated by electric resistance using spaced electrodes and subsequently cooling and quenching operations are performed. The metal may be long lengths of copper coated metal which may be tube formed from strip stock. The tube may be heated above the melting point of copper thereby forming copper welded tubes. A non - oxidizing atmosphere may be used throughout. As shown, a tube A passes between rollers 1 and roller electrodes shaped to the tube bear on it and are arranged in containers through which the tube passes and which are supplied with reducing gas. The tube enters the container 3 through a tube 6 and between the containers passes through a tube 10, container 4 and tubes for cooling and quenching. An oil that cracks and deposits carbon is used for coating the tube. Spring-pressed plungers 23, 26 transmit pressure to corresponding rollers 22, 25 bearing on the tube. The electrode rollers 21 are driven by a belt from the rollers 5. Certain of the electric circuits are controlled by presence or absence of the work. The cooling section involves a water jacketed unit connected to but sealed from the container 4. An outer jacket 31 connected to a water main 35 houses an inner pipe joined to the container 4. A tank 45 supplies reducing gas and a pipe 46 leads to a dryer 47. Oil under pressure from a pipe 75 passes to quenching unit 70 having outer and inner jacket, the latter provided with apertures for oil to be forced through against the tube.
