Abstract

477,347. Electron multipliers. MARCONI'S WIRELESS TELEGRAPH CO., Ltd. June 25, 1936, No. 17695. Convention date, July 31, 1935. [Class 39 (i)] A multiplier having two or more sets of electrodes has insulating means confining the electron streams so that they impinge without loss on the secondary emitting electrodes. As shown, in a tube of the " hopalong " type, the emitting electrodes 1, ... 6 and the withdrawing electrodes 11, .. , 16, are secured by lugs to mica strips A, B forming with the electrodes a closed channel. The output electrode 16 has a gauze portion 16a closing the end of the channel, and the electrode 11 is translucent, e.g. made with a wire gauze panel 11a so that light can fall on the cathode 1 when this is photo-electric. The electrodes 11 and 2, 12 and 3, .... , 15 and 6, are connected to common leads. The magnetic field may be set up by a coil, a permanent magnet, or a coil and pole-plates N. The cathode may be thermionic. The emitting electrodes may be caesium on oxidized nickel or silver or rubidium on oxidized silver.
