Abstract
476,854. Valves. MERCO NORDSTROM VALVE CO. May 24, 1937, Nos. 14360 and 14361. Convention dates, May 22, 1936 and April 22, 1937. [Class 135] Relates to sealing-means, and to resilient seating-means, in a valve having a rotary closure-member. The tapered plug valvemember 13 is resiliently held to its seat by a screw plug 26 acting through a ball 36 and resilient disc 34, and may be jacked therefrom by lubricant compressed in a chamber 18 by a screw 20 in the bored valve-stem. The threads of the plug 26 are interrupted by a groove 28 into which a sealing-medium (such as a mixture of graphite, asbestos and an unctuous material) is forced through radial channels 29 by a screw 31. The positions of the ball 36 and disc 34 may be interchanged, Fig. 3 (not shown). For larger valves, Figs. 4 to 6 (not shown), the plug 26 is replaced by a screwed-in plate through the centre of which the adjustable plug screws. In these constructions, various methods are shown of supplying sealing-medium to grooves interrupting the threads of both the plate and the screw-plug, check-valves being provided to prevent return of the sealing-medium.
