Abstract

474,250. Manhole covers and frames ; hinges. HARTLEY, C. J. May 2, 1936, No. 12482. [Class 107] [Also in Group XXV] A triangular manhole cover 13, which rests and hinges at two corners in semi-cylindrical recesses formed in pads 9 on the frame 11, is provided with lugs or 'projections 12 which engage in substantially L-shaped slots 10 in the frame, the slots being formed adjacent the pads and being of such dimensions that their upper walls completely overhang the lugs or projections when the cover is closed. When the cover is tilted to its vertical position the lugs are brought into line with the vertical open-ended portions 10c of the slots and the cover can then be lifted bodily from the frame. The slots may be formed with shoulders 10d which form abutments for the projections 12 when the cover is tilted back to the fully open position. The free corner of the cover rests on a pad 9a and may be fitted with a locking device such as a screw which passes through a hole in the cover and engages with a screwthreaded hole in the frame.
