Abstract

474,007. Mandrels and sockets. LASSER, E. Sept. 18, 1936, No. 25475. Convention date, Sept. 20, 1935. [Class 83 (iii)] A work-holding mandrel or socket having a cylindrical contact surface has a number of similar recesses extending from the contact surface obliquely to a radius therefrom so as to form flexible projections between them which are capable of bending slightly transversely in order to vary the diameter of the contact surface. Mandrels.-As applied to a mandrel the body 12, Figs. 1 and 2, is provided with longitudinal slots 13 forming arms 14 with thin bases e which allow the arms to flex under pressure. The slots are preferably tangential to an imaginary cylinder 16 and the cylindrical surface of the arms is relieved at 15 so that the parts 17 engage the work 7. In a modification the slots 13 are arranged helically. In another form, the body 35, Figs. 5 and 6, has conical collars 36 formed by circumferential slots 37, these collars being divided by radial slots 38. The mandrel may be built-up, as shown in Fig. 9, the arms 44 being soldered or welded into slots in the body 45. Sockets.-As applied to a socket, the body 40, Fig. 7, has arms 42 formed by inclined slots 41 running into longitudinal bores 12. The arms may be formed by circumferential slots inclined to the axis of the socket and axial slots similar to those shown in Figs. 5 and 6. In another form, the socket may be built-up from a body 50, Fig. 10, having arms 51 soldered or welded into slots. Depressions 52 on the arms make contact with the work &c. being gripped.
