Abstract
473,603. Mercury switches. BURGESS, A. F. (Adlake Co.) April 15, 1936, No. 10838. [Class 38 (v)] In a mercury tube switch in which movement of a soft iron armature 17 displaces mercury 15 to cause the completion of a circuit between electrodes 11, 12 and in which the armature is guided by members 22 that slide along the tube, the members 22 are made of relatively hard material such as steel, hardened graphite or mother-of-pearl. The members 22 may be projections on a ring 21, Fig. 3, which is held in place by a spring 19, mounted at the end of the armature on a tube 16 of quartz, glass &c., which lies within the tubular armature 17. In modifications the members 22 may be steel balls or pieces of motherof-pearl or graphite held in sockets in a ring, or a square of piano wire may be arranged on the end of the armature, its corners being adapted to slide on the glass.
