Abstract

Viscose is coagulated as a continuous film of a water-insoluble metal cellulose xanthate and the film is stretched transversely and regenerated. For example, a liquid sheet of viscose is treated with a coagulating non-regenerating <PICT:0473222/IV/1> bath containing zinc, aluminium or lead salts, or a film is first formed from viscose and then converted to the water-insoluble metal xanthate, before stretching and regeneration. Shrinkage of the regenerated cellulose film is inhibited in the longitudinal direction. A small amount of a weak acid or of an acid salt may be added to the coagulating or metal bath to prevent precipitation of the metal hydroxides. The metal bath also may contain a small quantity of another salt such as ammonium chloride, sodium chloride or sodium sulphate. Examples of suitable baths are given. The film may be stretched transversely by passing it between bowed expander bars 21 which include non-rotatable parallel shafts 23 and a plurality of interlocking rollers 22 which are rotatably mounted on the shafts 23 and are covered by a smooth yieldable material 24 such as rubber.
