Abstract

Transparent films, sheets, artificial glass, or like products of regenerated cellulose are obtained by spreading viscose in a thin layer on a continuously advancing support, completely drying the film produced, and then washing with boiling water. The use of acid, alkaline, or saline precipitation, hardening, desulphurizing, bleaching, or other treatment baths with their corrosive action on the apparatus employed is thereby avoided. If desired, the products may be provided with a metallic or textile fabric reinforcement. In an example, viscose containing alkali or alkaline-earth salts of weak acids such as sodium sulphide or calcium acetate is disposed in thin layers on an advancing band, cylinder cover, textile fabric or other support and subjected to drying at raised temperature. After complete drying has been effected the film is treated with boiling water containing softening agents and is then conducted over a drying apparatus and wound into a roll or divided into the required lengths. The products may be used for wrapping food material, for photographic purposes and as artificial glass.
