Abstract
472,747. Spring frames for motorcycles. TOMKINS, W. C. March 5, 1937, No. 6567. [Class 136 (iii)] A spring suspension for the rear wheel of a motor - cycle comprises a main bracket having a vertical part attached to the rear forks of the main frame, such bracket being provided with a vertical guide rod on which slides a wheel-carrying bracket abutting against a coil spring ; and is characterized by the following construction adapted to permit the guide rod, wheel-carrying bracket, and spring to be readily removed as a unit from the main bracket. A main bracket 5 having lugs 6 for receiving the rear ends of the frame tubes has an upper rearwardly-extending limb 8 forming a circular head-piece, which is provided with a conical bore to receive a boss 9 on the upper section 10 of a telescopic tube, the lower section 11 of which seats into a sliding wheel-carrying bracket 18. The bracket 18 has a hardened sleeve 19 sliding on a guide rod 14, the upper end of which screws into a sleeve 13, the lower end being secured by a nut 16 to an arm 15, which is attached to a boss 26 on the bracket 5. A compression spring 22 is interposed between the upper end of the tube 10 and a boss 21 on the sliding bracket 18. The bracket 18 is provided with a fork 24 to receive one end of the wheel spindle, and also with a brakeanchoring arm, and with a limb 25 forming part of a U-shaped stay which passes over the wheel and mudguard and connects the wheel-carrying brackets on opposite sides of the wheel. Shocks due to rebound are absorbed by a resilient washer 27 carried by the bottom of the bracket 18 and adapted to engage the arm 15. A dirtexcluding apron 28 surrounds the tube 11, which is fitted with a packing-ring 29. Lubricant is admitted through a nozzle 31 and an axial bore in the upper end of the guide-rod 14.
