Abstract
472,542. Metallic - vapour rectifiers. SIEMENS-SCHUCKERWERKE AKT.-GES. Feb. 26, 1936, No. 5779. Convention date, March 12, 1935. [Class 39 (i)] To prevent or reduce independent discharges between the anode and control grid of a mercury vapour rectifier having a glass vessel, the filling comprises a gas, preferably argon, at a pressure such that the length of free path for the electrons in the space between the grid and anode is substantially equal to the length of free path for the electrons in the vapour under normal working conditions. The gas pressure may be between 0À005 mms. to 1À0 mms. The supplementary filling may consist of a mixture of rare gases with or without other gases or vapours. The grid may be so constructed that the part adjacent the anode is further from the walls of the vessel, which alternatively may be suitably bulged. The cross-sectional area of the grid openings may be large compared with that of the solid surface of the grid and the total cross-sectional area of the grid may be small compared with that of the anode arm.
