Abstract
472,198. Electric heating for surface hardening. DENNEEN, F. S., and DUNN, W. C. Sept. 19, 1936, No. 25508. [Class 39 (iii)] In surface hardening a toothed wheel, splined shaft, or other ribbed power transmitting member 20, one or more inductor bars 25, 26, Fig. 1, are introduced between adjacent teeth to induce heating currents in the side faces and tops of the teeth after which quenching is effected. The bars 25, 26 are rotatably mounted and enclosed in a shell 29 with inlet and outlet connections 32, 34 for the quenching fluid. In a modification the inductor bars are perforated and form teeth on a wheel gearing with the wheel to be surface hardened. In Fig. 9 the inductor 85 is of similar contour to the wheel 89. It has perforations 87 and is arranged in a jacket 86 with a quenching fluid supply. In Fig. 6 a cylindrical inductor 59 has ribs 70 arranged opposite to the tops of the wheel teeth 57. The current passes through the inductor and the wheel in series but in opposite directions. The inductor is perforated and arranged in a jacket with quenching connections. Heat generated in the inductor is radiated to the wheel. Specifications 435,343 and 446,495 are referred to.
