<PICT:0471996/IV/1> <PICT:0471996/IV/2> <PICT:0471996/IV/3> <PICT:0471996/IV/4> An apparatus for treating materials, for example shoe stiffeners, with liquids and vapours comprises a tank for liquid and a vapour space above it, a cage for holding stiffeners, and mechanism whereby the stiffeners may be immersed in the liquid for a predetermined variable time, after which the cage is raised into the vapour space, a timing device continuing to run until the end of the vapour treatment is optically indicated. A tank 1 for conditioning liquid is surmounted by a vapour space 30 normally closed by a roller shutter moving in guides 34. The work-supporting cage comprises bent wires 21 carried by a channel member 26 having bridge members detachably engaging springs 27 on a plate 25 carried by a rod 20 having a bent-over end 22 normally resting on an arm 24 provided with a handle 7. The arm 24 is secured to a bar 6 slidable vertically in a guide 3 and formed with rack teeth on its two sides gearing with spur wheels 8, 9, 10, the lower portion of the teeth opposite the wheel 8 being cut away. The wheel 10 is urged clockwise by a weight 19. The wheel 9 is loose on its shaft but carries a pin 16 co-operating with a pin 17 on the wheel 8 which rotates with a wheel 13 connected by reducing gearing with a fan and driven by a clock spring 47. The wheel 10 carries a pin 37 co-operating with a pin 40 on an arm 41 movable over a scale 45 for setting the immersion period. For providing a fine adjustment for short periods, a spring pin carried by the arm and retracted by a head 43 and normally engaging one of the holes 44 for holding the arm in adjusted position, is engaged in a groove 48 in a member turned by a handle 51 moving over a scale 50. For allowing a rapid untimed immersion, a stop 54 on the wheel may be engaged by a spring plunger 55, which is manually depressed and stops the descent of the cage before the rack teeth engage with the wheel 8. Alternatively, a screw 52 may co-operate with a stop 53, to limit the descent of the racks. When the cage is in its upper position, the plate 25 contacts with a yielding insertion 32 carried by a frame 29 and sealing the conditioning liquid from the outside air. The wheel 8 carries a pointer 57 moving over a scale 58, 59 indicating the periods of vapour treatment and immersion, respectively.
