[Class 38 (v)] [Also in Groups XXIX and XXVI] In a hydraulic torque converter the shells of the impeller and turbine wheels are connected together, by an electromagnetic coupling, automatically at a predetermined speed of the driving or driven shaft. The circuit of the electromagnet is closed by a centrifugally-acting mercury switch 76 carried by a plate 74 rotatably driven by the driving or driven shaft ; the plate carries two such switches which, by reason of their different eccentricities on the plate, close at different speeds, and a band-operated switch is provided for putting the switches alternatively into the electromagnet circuit.
