471,422. Automatic control systems. C. A. V.- BOSCH, Ltd., GLASER, W. H., and WOOD, N. R. March 3, 1936, No. 6402. [Class 38 (iv)] Electromotive force.-Dynamo regulators, employing a carbon pile resistance, the pressure on which is regulated by an electromagnet responsive to variations in the output of the dynamo, are provided with means for giving greater control during increasing speed than during decreasing speed to compensate for lag in the action of the resistance. The carbon pile resistance C arranged in the exciting circuit of the dynamo is subjected to the pressure of the spring d, this pressure being varied by an opposed electromagnetic force due to the armature g acting through a lever f, and push rod e. When the speed of the dynamo is increasing, the rod e is raised by the electromagnet to reduce the pressure on the pile and contact j then engages contact l on a lever m held by friction. This short circuits resistance i so that the winding h of the electromagnet exerts its full effect. When speed is decreasing, rod e moves downwards so that contacts l, j do not engage and resistance i is then in series with winding h, thus reducing the electromagnetic effect. The contact may be held by friction in the end of the rod e. The electromagnet may be replaced or supplemented by an additional electromagnet which assists the action of the spring d, and is brought into action only when the contacts l, j are separated.
