Abstract
Catalysts for the oxidation of internal-combustion engine exhaust gases consist of a refractory metal which does not scale or disintegrate on heating, to which is applied a coating of a platinum metal. The preferred carriers are alloy steels containing aluminium, chromium, nickel, &c., and palladium is mentioned as the coating metal. To prevent diffusion of the platinum metal into the carrier the latter may be superficially oxidized or otherwise be provided with an intermediate coating. The carrier is preferably in the form of chips, turnings, &c., or of flat bands which may be woven to form a fabric. The reaction chamber and gas conduit may be made of the same material as the catalytic bodies.
