Abstract
Concentrated phosphoric acid is obtained by reacting rock phosphate with sulphuric acid of more than 50 per cent strength in an amount which is more than double the amount which is stoichiometrically equivalent to the lime content of the crude phosphate, separating the calcium sulphate formed from the liquid, and adding further amounts of crude phosphate to the liquid to convert the remaining sulphuric acid into calcium sulphate, a temperature of at least 80 DEG C. being maintained in the single stages of the decomposition. The rock phosphate may be added in several successive batches (say five) with the intervening removal of calcium sulphate. In the latter modification further sulphuric acid may be added to decompose the last batch of rock phosphate. Preferably 70 per cent sulphuric acid is employed at a temperature of 90--100 DEG C.
