[Class 60] For grinding or finishing a screw-thread, the work-piece a is mounted between centres b carried by a table f which slides freely on bearings g in the direction of the axis of the work and is rotated in contact with a driven grinding wheel i by means of a backing wheel j. When finishing a thread the work is moved past the grinding wheel by means of an adjustable control finger l attached to the grinding wheel head by an arm k. For grinding a thread on a blank, the work-piece is mounted in axial alignment with a master former m driven by a backing wheel j<1> at the same speed as the work and the control finger l is brought into engagement with the thread on the former. In this case a second control finger I adapted to engage the work-piece may be provided to assist in re-positioning the work on the grinding wheel for a secondary or finishing grinding operation.
