[Classes 39 (i) and 40 (v)] Volume expansion or compression of the signals applied from a source E, Fig. 1, to an amplifying valve R1 is produced by a control voltage applied to an auxiliary grid arranged between two screen-grids in the valve R1 and derived from a rectifier R3 fed with signal energy from an auxiliary amplifier R2. The manual volume control r<1> controls the input to both valves R1, R2 so that the amount of automatic control varies with the overall amplification. An independent control r2 of the automatic regulation is provided. In a modification, Fig. 2, the valve R acts in a dual capacity, the second grid providing the amplified signals for the gain control rectifier G the output from which controls the bias of the fourth grid. In this embodiment the second " grid " may comprise rods S, Fig. 3, arranged in the electron shadow of the supports of the first grid G1. The valve may also be provided with a further screen and suppressor grids.
