462,311. Specific-gravity , estimating- apparatus. JOHNSON, G. W. (I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.-Ges.) Sept. 5, 1935, No. 24779. [Class 97 (iii)] In a buoyancy balance for measuring the density of gases, changes of pressure or temperature cause the centre of gravity of the balance beam to be displaced automatically in the oscillation plane of but obliquely to the balance beam so that the directing force of the balance is simultaneously altered and compensates for the effect of temperature and pressure in all positions of the balance -beam. In the form shown, the balance beam c carrying at one end the displacement sphere b and at the other end a counterweight e of the same superficial area is pivoted at d in a housing a through which the gas to be tested passes. A U-shaped tube g containing mercury hand having a quantity of gas i trapped at the top of one limb and a reservoir l open to the housing a at the top of the other limb is secured to the beam c. If the pressure in the housing a falls, the gas i expands and displaces mercury from the point k to the reservoir l immediately over the pivot d. The displacement of the balance may be transferred to a recorder outside the housing a by means of a magnetic coupling acting through the wall of the housing. In a modification the beam c carries a resilient capsule communicating through a pipe with the interior of the sphere b and adapted to rock a leaf spring to the end of which is fixed a lever terminating in a weight and oblique to the beam c.
