Abstract
462,001. Steam. superheaters. BABCOCK & WILCOX, Ltd. (Babcock & Wilcox Co.) Aug. 30, 1935, No. 24217. [A Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, March 2, 1936.] [Class 123 (iii)] The flow of furnace gases over a superheaert 10 placed between banks of boiler tubes 16, 18 is so controlled by dampers 44, 56, 57, 59 that the mass flow of the gases, that is the mass per unit area of flow passage, is varied in accordance with the boiler load or superheat to prevent excessive variations in the superheat. At light loads, all the dampers are closed, to cause the gases to flow over the superheater between baffles 40, 42 in three passes and with the highest mass flow and consequent highest heat transfer rate. At heavy loads, the dampers are opened to increase the gas flow area. The dampers may be operated in turn by diaphragm motors to which pressure fluid is supplied through passages in a pilot valve operated in accordance with the temperature in the superheater outlet header or with the fall in pressure through the superheater.
