Abstract

1,106,001. Steam superheaters. BABCOCK & WILCOX Ltd. 28 Jan., 1966 [28 Jan., 1965], No. 3782/65. Heading F4A. An oil-fired marine boiler has parallel gas convection passes 6, 7 defined by vapour generating tubes 4, housing respectively a primary superheater bank 10 and two reheater tube banks 11 in pass 6, and two secondary superheating tube banks 12 and two economizer tube banks 13 in pass 7. The outlets 6a, 7a of the passes 6, 7 respectively are provided with dampers 20, 21 to control the gas flow therethrough, the combined gas flow then passing over further economizer banks 14 and air heating tube banks 15 in a duct 8. The air from the air tube banks 15 passes through air spaces 17 on its way to the burners (not shown). The spaces 17 are connected to gas pass 6 through an opening 22 normally closed by a damper 24. The damper 24 is connected by a link 25 to the dampers 20. When the dampers 20 are fully closed to stop gas flow through pass 6 the damper 24 is opened through link 25 to allow air from air space 17 to enter into gas pass 6 to prevent the tube banks therein from overheating. In place of preheated air, air direct from the atmosphere or cooled waste gases could also be used as tempering gases to prevent overheating of the tubes, which tempering gases could be introduced by a series of jets instead of through a single opening. The means controlling the flow of tempering gases may also be controlled automatically in response to the flow of working fluid through the reheater tubes, to the temperature of the tubes, or to the temperature of gas in the gas pass surrounding the tubes.
