Abstract

460,185. Making paper &c. bags. SMITHE MACHINE CO., Inc., F. L. June 21, 1935, No. 17909. Convention date, Aug. 2, 1934. [Class 94 (ii)] Apparatus for forming a satchel-bottom bag of paper &c. with a patch applied to the bottom thereof, comprises means for forming a tubular blank, means for folding the bottom flaps and for oppositely disposing the points thereof, means for continuously advancing the blank and for applying a patch to the flaps while the blank is in motion, means for folding the flaps across the patch and for adhering them together. Paper &c. transparent or opaque, from a reel, is gummed and formed into a tube and intermittently fed by rolls 2, slack being preferably produced in the web to aid feeding. The end of the former plate is bifurcated at 7 and a pair of tucker blades tuck therein the two leading corners of the tube, the top flap 5a, so formed, being lifted by a suction roller 8 and pressed backwardly by a roller pair 10. Cutting mechanism 11 then scores the foremost tubular blank which is moved continuously while being acted upon by the succeeding machine elements until the bag is completed. A conveyer 15 grips the bag blank, Fig. 7, and gum 29a, Fig. 8, is applied by a sector 29. Patch material 34, from a reel 33 is fed forwardly by continuously operating rolls 35, 36, a portion being cut therefrom by a camoperated blade 40. The feed roller 36 is carried by a frame rockable to allow of the threading-through of the material 34. The severed patch 56a is sucked by a spring-urged suction sector 56 and fed and pressed resiliently to the gummed bag bottom, Fig. 9. Scoring rolls 70, 71 score the tab at 71a and a gummed roller 72 applies gum patches 75a, 75b to the flaps and patches, Fig. 11. Strippers 79 pass the bag to the grip of belts 78, whereupon a spring-biassed blade 95, carried by oscillatory arms 98 and cam-operated by a plate cam 101 ... 105 folds over the trailing tab 5a over the leading tab 5b, which was previously folded in by a tucker blade 91, and presses and irons the same, Fig. 13.
