Abstract

315,670. Winkler, A., and D³nnebier, M. July 13, 1928, [Convention date]. Paper bags and envelopes, making.-An envelope making machine of the cylinder folding type is adapted for making flat paper bags in which the side folds overlap and are secured together as distinct from an envelope in which the side flaps do not meet but are secured to the bottom flap. As shown in Fig. 2, (I) the blank is disposed in the machine with the bottom and closure flap folds B, V longitudinal thereof, (II) is straightened preparatory to the creasing (III) of the side folds as at 6 (IV), the bottom and closure flaps are folded over, creased and (V) reopened, (VI) gum 12, 13 is applied to the bottom flap and one side flap, (VII) (VIII) the side flaps are folded and secured and (IX) the bottom and closure flaps finally closed, the former being simultaneously stuck down. Blanks 1, Fig. 1. are drawn by a suction device 2 into the path of 'rotatable fingers 3 on feeding rollers a<1>. The suction nozzle is formed with intersecting grooves disposed one parallel to and adjacent the front edge of the blanks and the other at right angles thereto, and the suction apertures are located in the bottoms of the grooves, one being close to the front edge of the blanks. The nozzle is connected by a tube 29, Fig. 6, to a hollow shaft 26 and an apertured bush 27 on the shaft 26 is rotated once for each movement of the nozzle to permit suction suddenly to be applied to, and cut off from, the blank. The rollers a<1> and their counter roller a rotate intermittently to feed the blanks in overlapping relation to slowly moving rollers b<1>, b. Rapidly moving rollers c<1>, c then separate the blanks for individual treatment by swinging straightening fingers 5, 4 which enter the re-entrant angles of the blank. The rear fingers 5 and the rollers c<1>, c are adjustable for different sizes of blanks. The rollers c', c, which serve in the case of an envelope blank to feed it to creasing cylinders d<1>, d for the side folds, cannot operate on the short side gap S' of a bag blank, and a segment 36 is provided on the cylinder d<1> to draw the blank a short distance to be gripped by a cam-actuated flap 38 which feeds it on to the cylinder d<1>. Cylinders e<1>, e feed the blank to adjustable folding bars 8 about which the bottom and closure flaps B, V are folded, permanently in the case of an envelope blank but temporarily in making a bag, adjustable guides 40 unfolding them immediately after their passage past creasing rollers f<1>, f. Gum supplied from a box 45 is applied to the bottom and side flaps at, 12, 13 by a gummer 11 and rollers h<1>, h pass the blank to an elbow 14 adapted to turn up the broad side flap S ready for a swinging blade 15 to tuck the fold between creasing cylinders i', i. To avoid contact with the gum on the blank, the cylinder i' comprises a narrow cross-bar 48, Fig. 10, fixed segments 49 which operate immediately after the bar 48, and segments 50 adjustable both along and angularly of the shaft 51 of the cylinder. The cylinders i, i<1> feed the blank against a reciprocable shut-off member 16 which turn it upwards preparatory to advancing it with the rear flap S<1> foremost. To allow for the shortness of the flap S<1> in the case of a bag, the feed is assisted by providing in the roller i a. suction channel 52 adapted to communicate with an annular channel in a fixed headpiece at one end of the cylinder. A folding blade 17 tucks the creased edge of the flap S<1> between a pressure cylinder i<11> and the cylinder i, a recess 57 in the cylinder i preventing smearing of the gummed portion 12. From thispoint, rollers k, k<1> - - n, n' pass envelopes without further treatment to a stacking device but bags have their bottom and closure flaps folded' over in known manner 'by adjustable bars 18 and guides 19, the formation of double folds being avoided by forming the rollers n with a narrow cylindrical portion 61, Fig. 15, adapted to engage the counter roller n' and merging into a narrower grooved portion 63 through a conical portion 62 which engages the fold edges of the flaps. Cams. 22 on a conveyer wheel 20 now pass the completed bag along guides 21 to a stacking table 66 where a swinging arm 67 transfers it to a pair of conveyer wheels 68 which by a worm-like action add it to the stack 23. German Specification 349,878 is referred to.
