Abstract

362,705. Wrapping cigarettes &c. TRIGGS, W. W., 57, Lincoln's Inn Fields, London.-(American Machine & Foundry Co. ; 511, 5th Avenue, New York, U.S.A.) Dec. 30, 1930, No. 39149. [Class 94 (ii).] Apparatus for making a double-walled container for cigarettes &c. comprises mechanism for folding an inner wrapper circumferentially about a mandrel and overhanging one end, folding devices arranged to fold opposite overhanging end flaps leaving two opposite flaps outstanding, mechanism for wrapping an outer wrapper circumferentially about the inner wrapper and the mandrel and overhanging one end, folding devices arranged to fold as a unit the outstanding flaps of the inner wrapper and the corresponding end flaps of the outer wrapper and folding devices to fold the remaining two end flaps of the outer wrapper. At station XII, the station also for ejecting a finished package, a strip of tinfoil F is led by feed rollers 19 through a guide 20 between a mandrel 16 and a clamping plate 22, and when sufficient has been fed and the clamp 22 moved toward the mandrel, the foil sheet is severed by a knife 21. The clamping arm 18 is then moved further toward the mandrel and in so doing the give in the spring 24 causes the plate 22 to swing about the pivot 26 and thus the end 27a folds the lower edge of the foil under the mandrel. The intermittent rotary turret 15 then moves to position I, the top edge of the foil being folded by passing a stationary bar 28 and being kept in position by brushes 29. The clamp 34, which holds the longitudinal edges of the foil wrapper, is moved backwardly so that folders 30, 31 can close in to fold the foil completely around the mandrel, after which the clamp 34 moves forwardly against the foil. At position II the swinging plate 35 tucks in a broad bottom flap and as the turret moves on to position III the substantially triangular member 36 tucks in the other broad bottom flap and leaves the two short side flaps creased and projecting slightly inwardly. At position III the outer wrapper of paper, having received a strip of paste along its outer edge which is to be last folded, is folded in a similar manner to that described with regard to the foil strip F at position XII. At position IV the outer wrapper is folded by passing a stationary bar 28<1>, the folded side being kept in position by brushes 29<1>. So that the outer wrapper may be completely wrapped around the mandrel and inner wrapper the clamp 34 is moved backwardly, the inner wrapper being kept in place by a clamping strip 37 moved by a spring-biased lever system 38, 40, 43, 45 and a rocking shaft 39, designed to give quick action to the strip 37 which engages a portion of the inner wrapper which is not covered by the outer wrapper. The outer wrapper is then folded by members 30, 31, after which the clamp 34 comes again into operation to seal the longitudinal edges and the clamping strip 37 is removed. At position V the two short side folds of the outer wrapper are made by members 49, which simultaneously fold in the projecting side flaps of the inner wrapping element. The member 50 moves to fold in one of the broad end flaps of the outer wrapper and in its passage past a roller 52 the other broad end flap is tucked in. Between stations VI and XI a batch of cigarettes is fed through the open end of the double bag the charged container being ejected at station XII. Additional folding means may also be incorporated to operate subsequently to the removal of the charged container to close the open end of the inner wrapper, the outer wrapper being closed by the positioning of a revenue stamp &c.
