Abstract
Invisible cigarette tips are produced by applying to the paper solutions of colourless and odourless cellulose derivatives which, after drying, show the structure of the paper unaltered. The tipping solution may be applied to the paper as it leaves the bobbin on its way to the cigarette machine. Cellulose esters or ethers, such as cellulose nitrate, acetate, xanthate, ethyl ether, &c., dissolved in methylacetate, methylchloride, &c. may be used. Softening-means such as phthalates may be added, and if desired menthol or other aromatic substances. Phosphates may be added to render the tips non-inflammable, and fats &c. to make the paper appear more or less transparent. An example of tipping-solution comprises a 30 to 40 per cent solution of acetylcellulose in equal parts of methylacetate and acetone, to which is added 3 per cent phthalates, and if desired 3 to 5 per cent fat or wax, 1/2 to 1 per cent menthol, and 3 to 5 per cent phosphates.
