Abstract
458,378. Regulating - valves. ARMSTRONG, C. H., and COPES REGULATORS, Ltd., 5, Theobalds Road, London. Sept. 13, 1935, No. 25437. Convention date, Sept. 26, 1934. [Class 135] Relates to regulating-valves, particularly to valves operated automatically by pressureresponsive or thermostatic devices or by devices responsive to water level, such as thermal elements of the inclined tube type. Specification 303,238, [Class 135], in which the valve member is both rotated and moved axially, is referred to. The casing 1, of a boiler feedvalve, for example, has an inlet 2 and an outlet 3 at right-angles thereto. A fixed member 4 with ports 6 forms a guide for a movable member 7 with corresponding ports 8 and also with small ports 11 leading to the space between the closed upper ends of the members. A projection 10 on the movable member enters an opening 9 in the closed end of the fixed member. The ports 6, 8 are inclined and lie within an annular space 12 to obviate eddy effects. Secured to the movable member is an actuating spindle 13 with a lever 16 adapted to be actuated, e.g. from a water level responsive device and a counterweight 17 may be fitted. Axial movement of spindle 13 is limited by a shoulder 18 engaging a bearing 19 secured in an extension 24 by a removable sleeve 20. A collar 21 seated against a bearing 22 secured to the upper end of the spindle forms an abutment for a spring 23 which bears'at its other end against extension 24. Downward movement of the valve is determined by an exchangeable collar 25. A pointer 26 and scale indicate the valve position. When fluid is flowing, the inlet pressure acts on the outside of member 7 and on the inner face of its closed end. The outlet pressure acts upon the projection 10. Thus, the movable member, even with high fluid pressure is subjected to only a relatively small force and is accordingly sensitive to pressure changes. With very high pressures, the flow past the ports tends to rotate the valve, but as an increase of inlet pressure produces an increased force on the thrust bearings and a consequent increased friction, the tendency to rotation is checked.
