Abstract

458,112. Engraving. DALTON, J. W., 17, The Crescent, Belmont, Surrey, and DAILY MIRROR NEWSPAPERS, Ltd., Geraldine House, Fetter Lane, London. June 13, 1935, No. 17107. [Class 100 (ii)] In a rotary cutter, particularly for producing engraved. surfaces, of the kind having a rotor consisting of vanes or blades driven by jets of air, two or more sets of vanes or blades are provided, and the jets are directed towards opposite ends of the axis of rotation. The jets may be arranged to bias axially the rotor, thrust thereon being thereby counteracted. In the apparatus shown in the Figure, a cutter 2 is carried by a hollow spindle 24 provided with a rotor 3 consisting of two sets of cupped blades 4 surrounded by a housing 12 which is formed with inclined passages 8 for directing opposite jets of air on to the blades. The jets may be arranged to bias the spindle axially. The spindle has a closed end 25 resting on a pivot 16 supported by a spring 20 which is mounted at the end of a member 21 for moving the cutter axially. The rotor and spindle are connected by a key 27 which passes through slots 28, 29 and is secured by a nut 30. To facilitate extraction of the cutter, a rod 32, mounted in the spindle, abuts on the key, and the slots 28, 29 are so arranged that the spindle can be moved axially to cause the cutter to abut on the rod. The housing is provided with a lubricating-passage 13 and a passage 14 for exhausting the cuttings. The pivot 16 is provided with a lubricating-passage 17. The feed movements of the cutter may be controlled by the apparatus described in Specification 389,102. In a modification, the cutter is formed at the top of a spindle which passes through the rotor and is provided at the bottom with a bearing.
