Abstract
Phytosterins are extracted from raw materials containing them by a process which comprises steam distillation in a high vacuum and at a high temperature, for example, above 200 DEG C., followed by a further treatment of the distillate for the isolation of the phytosterins. The preferred distillation pressure is from 2--20 mms. of mercury. The preferred further purification treatment of the distillate is fractional crystallization which also effects a separation of the various phytosterins. This treatment may be followed by a saponification process with alkali and the product extracted with benzene or alcohol. Raw materials mentioned are alcohol extracts from oil production and the acetic ester or acetone extracts from lecithin purification. In an example, soya oil is steam distilled in a vacuum of 2--20 mms. of mercury, the distillate dissolved in alcohol, allowed to crystallize, centrifuged and if desired further purified by crystallization. The product so obtained has a phytosterin content of about 25 per cent and may be further purified by a saponification with potash, and crystallization from alcohol.ALSO:Phytosterins are extracted from raw materials containing them by a process which comprises steam distillation in a high vacuum and at a high temperature for example above 200 DEG C., followed by a further treatment of the distillate for the isolation of the phytosterins.
