Abstract

Sound and heat insulating materials are made by impregnating mineral or slag wool with sodium or potassium silicate solution combined with an ammonium salt, an acid salt, or an acid in such proportions that a silica gel is formed and a portion of the silicate remains to combine separately with the slag wool. The composition may be moulded and dried at a suitable temperature. In an example 4 litres of commercial sodium silicate at 35-36 DEG B<\>ae. are mixed with a cold solution of 200-225 grams of ammonium sulphate in 8 litres of water. The mixture is used for impregnating 3 to 3,5 kgs. of mineral wool.
