Abstract
456,592. Refrigerating. METROPOLITAN - VICKERS ELECTRICAL CO., Ltd., 1, Kingsway, London.-(Smith, D. M.; c/o Metropolitan -Vickers Electrical Export Co., Ltd., P.O. Box 3633, Johannesburg, South Africa) June 27, 1935, No. 18431. [Class 29] Cold air and like machines.- In an aircooling and ventilating system, particularly for mines, the air from the locality is used as the working medium in a refrigerating- machine operated by a fluid motor in which air under pressure is expanded. The exhaust air from the motor is passed to the locality, whereby the cooling effect from the expansion of the air is added to the cooling effect obtained by the refrigerating machine. A primary stream of compressed air from pipe 1 drives a turbine 2 to the wheel 3 of which is coupled a compressor 4 which draws air from the locality to be cooled through a pipe 6. The compressed air is passed through a cooler 8 and by pipe 10 to the turbine 2. This secondary air stream propels the rotor 3, and, after expansion is mixed with the primary air, and flows along pipe 13, at a temperature somewhat above freezing point, to a circulator 14 which aspirates a tertiary stream of air from the locality, and mixes it with the cooled air, the resultant mixture being passed through a fog extractor 18 containing thin plates, or fibrous material, before being returned through outlet 20 to the locality. In modifications, the turbine may be provided with two rotor elements, the expansion of the pressure air being effected in two stages, and one or more heat-exchangers may be used between the cooled air, and the air from the locality with which it is to be mixed. In Fig. 8, the compressed air from the cooler 8 passes direct to a circulator 64 which draws air from the locality by a pipe 65 through a heat-exchanger 66, the cooled expanded air from the turbine 2 passing by a pipe 63 through the heat exchanger 66, and pipe 69, to mix with the air from the circulator 64.
