Abstract

Polymerization products are manufactured by conjoint polymerization of a preponderating amount of a polymerizable organic compound containing a single --C=C-- double bond and a smaller amount, e.g. less than 12 per cent, of a polymerizable 1 : 3-diene. Examples describe the polymerization of mixtures of: (1) acrylic acid and butadiene-1 : 3 (in emulsion in water containing the sodium salt of the hydrochloride of diethylaminoethoxyoleylanilide, by the action of hydrogen peroxide); (2) styrene and isoprene (by heating with benzoyl peroxide); (3) isopropenylmethyl ketone and 2-chlorobutadiene-1 : 3 (in emulsion in water containing isobutylnaphthalenesulphonic acid, by the action of benzoyl peroxide). Reference is also made to polymerization by the action of light. Other starting materials specified are: vinyl esters, vinyl ethers, acrylic esters and acrylic nitrile.
