Abstract

1278421 Polymerizing styrene LANKRO CHEMICALS Ltd A T PUGH and A G CHESWORTH 23 June 1970 [27 June 1969] 32704/69 Heading C3P [Also in Division C2] 257 g. of water, 30 g. of a sulphonated oleic acid, 1À5 g. sodium bicarbonate and 1À5 g. potassium persulphate were stirred until clear in a suitable vessel equipped with condenser, dropping funnel and thermometer. 22À5 g. of stabilized styrene were added and the mixture heated to 75‹ C. 202À5 g. of styrene was then added dropwise over a period of one hour, the temperature being maintained at 75‹ C. To complete the reaction, the mixture was heated to 82‹ C. for 25 minutes. The resulting product was a fine stable emulsion of low viscosity, which was maintained on storage.
