Abstract

456,107. Starting Diesel engines. DAIMLER-BENZ AKT.-GES., Untert³rkheim, Stuttgart, Germany. March 18, 1936, No. 8126. Convention date, March 18, 1935. [Class 7 (v)] For starting a Diesel engine having an induction pipe 1 connected along its length to cylinder inlets 4...9, and an auxiliary induction passage 10 through which combustible mixture is drawn at starting, the passage 10 is connected to about the middle of the induction pipe 1, or several such passages are connected to the induction pipe at points along its length, in order to give an even charging of the engine cylinders. As shown, the passage 10 is provided with a starting carburetter 12, an electric vaporizer 11, and a throttle 13 arranged to open when the main throttle 3 is closed. The throttles 3, 13 may be controlled by hand or automatically by a centrifugal governor. In a modification, the passage 10 is connected to the induction pipe 1 by branch passages opposite to the cylinder inlets 4 ... 9, the induction pipe being fitted with throttles operated from the throttle 3 and arranged to divide the induction pipe at starting into sections, each connected to one of the branch passages and one of the engine cylinders. In a further modification, each of the branch passages is fitted with a separate starting carburetter, vaporizer, and throttle, all the throttles being connected for simultaneous or successive operation.
