Abstract

454,291. Securing gear wheels on shafts. BURGESS, A. F., 10, New Court, Lincoln's Inn, London.-(Barber-Colman Co. ; River Street, Rockford, Illinois, U.S.A.) Aug. 23, 1935, No. 23694. [Class 80 (ii)] In a rigid spline coupling between a shaft 11 and an element such as a gear-wheel 12, the splines 15 on both members are longitudinally tapered in width, and at least one side of each spline is helicoidal. The other side may be straight or helicoidal in the same or opposite direction. The splines may seat only at their sides, or their roots may also be longitudinally tapered so as to provide an additional seating surface. A nut 14 secures the element on the shaft and takes up wear in the splines. The splines of the outer element 12 are formed in two operations by a multiple helical broach, whilst the shaft-splines are generated by a hob 21, Fig. 10, the thread 22 of which tapers in width from one end to the other. The shaft and hob are rotated in timed relation whilst the latter is fed in a diagonal direction, shown dotted. As shown in Fig. 10, the sides of the splines are oppositely inclined, the sides of the thread of the hob being generated on different pitch circles. Ribs 25, on the hob, cut clearance slots 19 at the base of the splines.
