Abstract
459,689. Taps. CLAYTON, C. E. EVERY-, 51, Chancery Lane, London.-(Tucker, J. D. ; North Sacramento, California, U.S.A.) March 16, 1936, No. 7897. [Class 83 (iii)] A screw-cutting tap has a body 1 with threads 5 which are circumferentially continuous over at least 180, as shown in Fig. 4. Parallel flutes 3 are provided at the leading and trailing ends of the threads and the portion 4 between the flutes is reduced below the roots of the threads. An additional flute 7, extending for approximately half the length of the threaded portion, is provided on the part 4 and is arranged unsymmetrically as shown in Fig. 3 so that the cutting edge L is acute whilst the trailing edge 10 is untouched by the flute. The flute 7 extends from one flute 3 to the other, obliterating one flute 3 at the leading end of the tap and has a longitudinal curvature as shown in Fig. 2, to direct cuttings forwardly. The flutes 3 are undercut as shown in Fig. 4. The first threads of the tap are bevelled at 6, Fig. 2, and in a modification these threads may be individually relieved at the forward edges, so as to slope towards the axis more acutely than the bevelled surface.
