Abstract
454,164. Long-arms. CHILDS, D. S., St. Eval, Marshall Avenue, Worthing. March 28, 1935, No. 9672. [Class 61 (ii)] [See also Group I] A weed-extractor, which may be used as a long-arm, comprises a pair of metal plates 1, 5 pivotally connected together side by side and having jaw portions 4 arranged to overlap one another, the operative edge of each jaw having a gap 3 formed therein disposed so that the gaps approximately coincide when the jaws are closed together and form a constricted weedencircling opening when the jaws overlap, the portions of the operative edges which extend from the gap to the jaw extremities being correlated to form a V-shaped opening prior to and following the separation of the jaws when moving apart. The plates are shaped as shown, the plate 1 being secured on a long handle 2 and the plate 5 being connected to the plate 1 by a pivot 6 and being normally held open by a spring 7. The plate 5 is closed by means of a wire or rod 10 connected to a rimmed sleeve 11 on the handle 2, the movements of the sleeve being limited by a slot 14 and screw 15. A stop block 8 limits the opening and closing movements of the plate 5. Flats or projections 16 are formed on the plates to prevent them from cutting through thinstemmed weeds.
