Abstract
453,941. Making, filling, and sealing bags &c. WEIR, G., Belmont Flats, Marine Parade, Durban, South Africa. March 16, 1935, No. 8190. [Classes 94 (i) and 94 (ii)] Bag-making.-A web 8 from a roll 5 supported on a core 11, braked by leaf springs 9, is fed by rolls 14, 15 over a table 2. Roll 14 protrudes through the table while roll 15 is periodically raised and lowered, by crank mechanism, with regard to roll 14, to feed the web intermittently. The forward edge of the web is pressed by a rubber-covered arm 36 against the lower face of the mandrel 24, the arm 36 being actuated by a bell-crank pivoted in a block 38 forming a part of the mandrel and also functioning as the bag stripping device. The mandrel 24 is rotated intermittently by a toothed segment 16, which engages a pinion 27 on the shaft 25 carrying the mandrel, and is maintained against motion, in the intervals, by a recessed disc 30 on the shaft 25 engaging against the rim 28 of the cam disc 17. The web 8 is now wrapped around the mandrel 24 by the rotation of the same, and is pressed thereagainst by a cam-actuated resilient presser. Before the leading portion of the web 8 is severed, glue is deposited transversely on the web by nozzles 41 fed from a reservoir 44 by a cam-actuated plunger pump. The web is now severed, during motion, by a serrated blade 50, spring- pressed against the vertical edge of the adjustable platform 13, the blade resting on a roller 59 actuated by a bell-crank 57, which cooperates with a fixed blade 48. The pressure beneath the mandrel holds the longitudinal glued seam b while the bottom of the tube is folded in to form the bag bottom. This is done by spring-urged cam-operated folders 72, 73, 74, 75, in the order named, ears 85 on the folder 73 taking a supply of gum from a branched pipe 86, fed by a pump from the reservoir 44, to apply the same to the upstanding triangular tabs e, f subsequently folded over by the folders 74, 75. A camoperated presser pad 101 is now forwarded to contact with the finished bag bottom and the mandrel portion 38, is moved against the pad 101 by a rod 88, through a resilient lever train 91, 94, 95, and cam 17, to withdraw the bag from the mandrel and position it in a four-unit cage 113, rotated step-by-step from the main shaft 4. Bag-filling.-The cage unit, with the completed bag therein is turned into the vertical to stand beneath a shoot 129, fed from a hopper 128 through gate valves. Upper and lower cam-operated valves, the upper valve allowing a leakage, even in its closed position, isolate a measured charge, while a third adjustable gate valve, acting in cooperation with the upper valve, adjusts the leakage gap to suit the material being packed. When the charge has been dropped in it is used as a core over which to seal the open end of the bag. A cam-operated plate 155 folds over the first edge and the opposite edge is folded over, as the filled bag moves around the centre of rotation 114 of the cage, by a fixed plate 166. Rotating discs 177, taking glue from containers 180, apply it to the upstanding side triangular flaps which are folded over by curved plates 181, with which co-operate two tapering spring forks 183 positioned beneath the side flaps to assure proper folding down. A guard 184, concentric with the shaft 114, retains the package in its cage until the lowermost position is reached when it is allowed to fall from the cage, aided by a pusher 187, into a conveyer. A hopper may be provided, co-operating with the platform 13, for feeding scored cardboard liners which are placed on to the web 8 and folded therewith around the mandrel 24 inside the bag. In the event of a damaged bag reaching the filling position the charge may be withheld by a manually operated control handle 191 which keeps the lower gate valve closed.
