Abstract
<PICT:0452503/III/1> Solid articles are made from metal powders or metal carbide powders or mixtures thereof by subjecting the powder contained in a mould to the action of a field produced by an alternating current of high-frequency. Part of the material may be in the form of granules or turnings. The action may be carried out in the presence of inert gases such as argon, krypton or neon, or of hydrocarbons to effect carburizing, or of ammonia to effect nitrogenizing. The action may take place under pressure, the gaseous atmosphere being also under pressure, if desired. Articles having bores, holes, cavities or recesses may be formed by the use of a vaporizable core such as of borax. Articles may be made by this process of an alloy comprising 80 per cent of metals of groups V and VI and 20 per cent of silver. An apparatus for producing a draw plate comprises a fireclay vessel wound with a coil 7; within the vessel is a ceramic mould 3 in which the powder 5 and a borax core 6 is placed, a lid 4 being placed thereon. Neon, at a pressure of 10 atmospheres is passed through the apparatus. Tools, tool parts, valves, valve parts and injection nozzles for internal-combustion engines may be made. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 173,237, [Class 82 (i)], 383,387; 399,318, [Group XXXV], and 405,983.
