Abstract

Carbon disulphide is recovered from the wash oil used in scrubbing gases, such as coal gas, by extracting the oil, after removal, of carbon dioxide therefrom, with a methyl alcoholic solution of an alkali, such as caustic soda. The sodium methyl xanthate formed is separated in the alcoholic layer, decomposed with acid and distilled to recover methanol and the carbon disulphide. Solutions of ammonium or alkali sulphide or polysulphides or concentrated aqueous solutions of organic amines or ammonia may be used as extracting agents.
