Abstract
451,206. Splints ; tension apparatus. MASTERS, E. F., 240, New Kent Road, London. Feb. 4, 1936, No. 3349. [Class 81 (ii)] In splints, supports, or cradles for limbs of the type comprising a U-shaped metal frame the limbs of which are telescopic or otherwise made extensible, the width of the frame also being variable at its open end at which the side limbs are connected to an attachment for encircling the limb, the side limbs of the frame are connected together at their free ends by a contractile ring of pads which are adjustably connected to the side limbs by pivot joints of such a nature that the pad structure can be set and rigidly clamped at any desired angle in relation to the ends of the limb. As shown, the frame is made up of a U-shaped end piece 1, formed of two members pivoted at 4, the limbs of which fit telescopically into tubes 2 being secured by clamping nuts 3. Pads 6, preferably filled with rubber and covered with leather for gripping the sides of the leg or arm are pivoted on the free ends of the tubes 2 at 5. A strap 7 runs through the pads and the gaps between the pads are covered by further wide straps. A limb support 10, supported by webbing or straps 20 is provided between the frames. A fitting 11 is provided with an ankle strap 12, an instep strap 17 and V-shaped side straps 13 guided along the limbs of the frame 1 by rings 16 and is connected by a swivel hook 14 to springs 15, thereby allowing spring tension to be applied to that portion of the limb below the fracture. An adjustable bridge member 18 extends upwardly across the top of the limb and serves to hold the bed clothes from contact with the limb and for the adjustment of the width of the appliance when in use The member 18 consists of two L-shaped members having slots 19 in their overlapping portions through which a screw provided with a finger nut 20 passes, one of the members being provided with a guide strap 21 for the passage of the other member. The member 18 is longitudinally movable along the frame of the appliance.
