Abstract

450,959. Electric resistance heaters. YOUNG, R. C. K., Norman's Hill, Onehunga, Auckland, New Zealand. Oct. 22, 1934, No. 30273. [Class 39 (iii)] In a heating-unit comprising contacting members 1A of resistance material insulatedly mounted in a metal casing 2 and subjected to adjustable pressure by a member 5A partly external of the casing, a collar 5B on the adjusting member engages resilient packing rings 8 in a stuffing box in the casing. In modifications of this construction, the collar and stuffing box are replaced by a flexible diaphragm held at its periphery, and the diaphragm may be arranged between separate parts of the adjusting member. The unit shown is a water heater and constructions of a soldering iron, a hand iron and a cooking plate are described. The casing is filled with oil in the case of the hand iron if it is constructed for a low voltage supply, such as 15 volts. The contacting members are of carbon, or carbon members may alternate with steel members, or steel members may alternate with cast-iron members. Fig. 6 shows carbon contacting members of chevron or dished cross-section with pointed or rounded centre-portions.
