450,880. Testing physical qualities of materials. HENNING, H. J., 7, Pistorisstrasse, and KNOTE, R., 131, Dieskaustrasse, both in Leipsic, Germany. Feb. 1, 1935, No. 3364. Convention date, Feb. 14, 1934. [Class 106 (ii)] The force with which a pad of material such as textiles, hair, paper, cotton wool &c. resists compression comprises a momentum motor device, such as a pendulum adapted to give repeated blows to the specimen, the work done in damping the movement being measured by the aggregate of several compressions or extensions. A pendulum 1 is suspended from a spindle 121 mounted in ball bearings 2 carried by the frame and has fixed to it and projecting above the bearing a bracket 3 with a pivot 3<1> carrying an arcuate arm 4 with a finger 5, the arm having limited freedom of rotation and being held normally in the position shown by springs. In the path of the finger 5 is one arm of a double-armed lever 12 mounted on the spindle 12<1> and to which is fixed the rod 6 of a piston 7 working in an arcuate cylinder 8 adapted to receive the specimen. A weight 13 balances the piston and a stop 13<1> limits movement of the lever in one direction. To the arm 4 is connected a finger 10 bevelled at the free end and in whose path is a roller 11. The specimen is placed in the cylinder and the pendulum is swung to the mark 50 on the scale 9 and released. When it reaches the vertical position shown, the finger 5 strikes the lever 12 and continuing the swing compresses the specimen until it reaches say the mark 15 on the left of the scale. In that position of the mechanism, the finger 10 strikes the roller 11 and is deflected disconnecting the pendulum from the lever 12 which swings back to normal. The pendulum swings left say until the mark 45 and then back say to 41. During the next swing to the left the specimen is compressed again and so on until on swinging to the left the mark 15 is not reached when the test is over. The number of swings made is a measure of the resilience of the specimen. The pendulum may be made to act on the specimens to apply tension to it. A flywheel may be made to act on the specimen in a similar way.
