Abstract

530,503. Testing balance of rotary apparatus. AVERY, Ltd., W. & T. (Schenck Eisengiesserei und Maschinenfabrik Darmstadt, Ges., C.). June 27, 1939, No. 18617. [Class 106 (ii)] Means for determining and indicating the magnitude of the compensating weight comprising a pointer to which a variable leverage setting is given, determined by the ratio between the movement of the compensating force and the unbalanced force at its plane of correction the pointer being moved through an angle governed by the longitudinal traverse of the rotatable counter-balancing weight relative to a lever arm whereby a direct indication is afforded of the compensating weight required. The invention is applied to a wellknown form of balancing machine shown in Fig. 1 in which the spindle 6a of the rotor to be balanced is mounted at one end in a fulcrum bearing 7 and at the other end in a resilient bearing 8 connected to a bearing 9 at one end of a lever shaft 10 fulcrummed at 10a. On the shaft 10 is slidable a disc 11 carrying an eccentric weight G which can be adjusted angularly of the disc relative to the unbalanced part u of the rotor 6. Adapted to be indirectly connected to the disc G and traversable therewith is a slide 12, Fig. 2, which carries an upwardly extending guide rod 12a pivotally associated with a pointer 14 pivoted at 14a. The pointer has a longitudinal slot adapted to receive a pin 17a projecting from a member 17 which is provided with a cruciform slot to accommodate the guide rod 12a and a second guide rod 16b having a sleeve 16 an index on which slides over a scale S. A graduated chart attached to the frame of the machine is provided with the scales S, S<SP>1</SP> which indicate lever ratio and counterbalancing force respectively, while a third scale 15 indicates the correction required in the pre-determined plane of the rotor. The sleeve 16 is set prior to a test and the setting depends upon the position of the correction plane in relation to the supporting planes or bearings of the rotor. This is obtained by a diagonal chord and graduated scale. Various modifications of arrangements of scales and pointers are described.
