Abstract

450,689. Compound sheet materials. CHAPMAN, G. W., 28, Maida Avenue, Ching- ford, Essex. Jan. 23, 1935, No. 2209. [Class 140] [See also Group IX] A resilient padding for upholstery &c. comprises a thin continuous fleece or carded web 2 lapped transversely in superposed overlapping layers on a continuously moving conveyer 3, e.g. by a Blamires machine or a Camel Back machine 1, the top surface of the uppermost layer of the fleece being sprayed during the lapping operation with a bonding liquid such as rubber latex, e.g. by one of the nozzles 6 which are arranged to spray on alternate movements of the Camel Back. The resultant padding is passed between rollers 4 on leaving the conveyer 3. The fleece may be sprayed over its whole width or over a centre or edge portion, to form a padding impregnated throughout or with part of its thickness unimpregnated. The intensity of the spray may vary over the width of the fleece. Alternate layers may be sprayed. Cotton linters, wastes, pulled rag or bagging, jute, hair, &c. may be used. Two or more fleeces of different materials and different widths may be fed simultaneously on to the conveyer, side by side, or superposed ; for example, a thin fleece of hair or jute may be fed on to a broader fleece as the latter is being lapped, the spray of latex extending over the layer of hair or jute and a portion of the other fleece at each side thereof. A backing of canvas &c. which may have had hair or fibre stitched or needled thereto, may be fed on to the conveyer under the lapped fleece, the layers being united by the latex impregnating the fleece. The latex may include a flameproofing substance such as borax or an ammonium salt, accelerators, &c.
