Abstract

448,428. Motor-vehicle steering-gear. ALVIS CAR & ENGINEERING CO., Ltd., and CLARKE, G. T. SMITH-, Holyhead Road, Coventry. Nov. 6, 1934, No. 31839. [Class 79 (v)] The steering control member is connected with a steering shaft through two-speed gearing controlled by an element which is quickly slidable from one operative position to another and is always biassed towards one or other operative position so that it will not stay in a neutral position. In the construction shown, an epicyclic twospeed gear is provided between the steering hand wheel 15 and the steeering shaft 12. A sun-wheel 18 is fixed to the hand wheel, a planet carrier 16 is fixed to the steering shaft and carries planet pinions 17 gearing with the sun-wheel and with a slidable toothed annulus 19 which slides with but is rotatable in a casing 20 keyed to the stationary steering column 13. When the annulus is moved upwardly it is clutched to the hand wheel at 21 and the gear is locked so that the hand wheel and the shaft 12 are locked together ; when the annulus is moved downwardly it is clutched at 22 to the stationary steering column so that the shaft is driven by the hand wheel at a reduced rate. The casing 20 is movable by a lever or by hand grips 23 and is retained in either gear position by a ball catch 24 engaging adjacent V-notches 25. Any other snap-action control may be used. The two-speed gear may be in the steering gear-box 14. According to the Provisional Specification the snap-action comprises two levers connected by a spring, one carrying a roller coacting with a triangular cam.
