Abstract

Benzene hexachloride is produced by treating with chlorine in presence of water a distillate of boiling range 75--90 DEG C., obtained from the heat treatment of mixtures of coal and oil. The oil to be admixed with the coal may be a petroleum oil, a creosote oil, a coal oil or an oil resulting from the distillation of any of these oils mixed with coal. In an example, the chlorination is effected by bubbling chlorine through the distillate in the presence of a layer of water, the reaction vessel being cooled with ice-water. The benzene hexachloride is separated off and recrystallized from methylated spirit. The Provisional Specification includes the use of a distillate of boiling-range 75--120 DEG C.
