Abstract
446,105. Two-part couplings. HIGHFIELD, J. S., and HIGHF1ELD, W. E., 36, Victoria Street, Westminster. Oct. 26, 1934, Nos. 30798 /34 and 684 /35. [Class 38 (i)] [See also Group XXXVII] A switch comprises a number of contact - members 1 held resiliently apart when the switch is open, with at least two air gaps in series, the switch being closed by rotating a cam 5 to force the contact-members together. In the form shown, the cam is formed on a plug member 65 and is inserted through a key-hole slot 53 in the casing of the switch and rotated through 90‹ to press the blades 1 together to close the circuit, each of the lobes of the cam being covered by a metal conductor 40 connected to a terminal in the plug. The slot 53 is normally closed by a brass plate 67 mounted on a pin 56 and controlled by a spring 58. When the plug is inserted, the plate 57 is pressed back by a flange 37 on the plug member and engages a contact-member 59 connected to the pin 56, while the latter enters a socket 55, to provide an earthing connection for the apparatus, such as the handle of a soldering iron to which the plug is connected.
