Abstract
Hydrocarbon oils are converted into products of lower boiling point by treating them at temperatures from 150--300 DEG C., in presence of a catalyst made by impregnating a carrier such as bauxite with a solution of the crystalline chlorides of zinc, aluminium or magnesium and evaporating the soaked carrier to dryness. The bauxite is preferably prepared as described in Specification 445,727. The catalyst is regenerated by boiling with water to remove the contaminating oil and calcining the wet residue at red heat. The solution removed is then concentrated and poured onto the catalyst with fresh hydrochloric acid and aluminium chloride solution to make up for losses.
