Abstract
444,532. Ceramic bodies. JENAER GLASWERK SCHOTT & GEN., Otto-Schott- Strasse, Jena, Germany. July 22, 1935, No. 20737. Convention date, Aug. 1, 1934. [Class 87 (i)] Ceramic bodies containing much silica and a small content of fusing means and having a very small coefficient of thermal expansion, are made by heating the shaped body to a temperature below fusing point but sufficient to frit the material, and then cooling rapidly to avoid crystallization. For large bodies, parts are made as described above and broken up into small pieces which are then moulded by means of an agglutinant to the form desired, and the body is treated again by fritting and rapid cooling. As an example, a body containing 95 per cent silica, 4À2 per cent alumina, and 0À8 per cent oxides of sodium, potassium, calcium, and magnesium is burnt at 1600‹ C. and cooled quickly. The expansion when reheated to 800‹ C. is 0À12 per cent, or about twice that of quartz glass.
